Considering the events that took place in author Jennifer Armentrout’s novel Obsidian, I was totally pumped up to begin reading the sequel Onyx. Who wouldn’t be? For one thing, Onyx has a totally hot male, a strong and funny main character with aliens and government agents—awesome-sauce? Awesome-sauce.Considering what I read about in the synopsis of Onyx the novel sounded like it would be full of fun and fast-paced action. Not to mention that it’s way longer than the novel before it, Obsidian. Onyx focuses mostly on Katy’s life now that she and Daemon are involved in an alien bond and with the sudden arrival of the DOD in town. There’s no more mystery behind Daemon and his sister, the world of the Luxen is very real for Katy now and honestly I loved that despite being in a world full of danger Katy was still independent.Especially since she now holds alien abilities that she got from when Daemon healed her.I know what you’re thinking: What?! Alien abilities???!!! OMG! You heard me right, alien abilities. And thanks to those same abilities Katy’s life is in more danger than ever in Onyx. Not to mention that now she has a freaky alien mojo that makes her able to shatter windows and freeze things midair. So yeah, there is that awesomeness, but don’t forget Daemon. We finally, finally get to see a side of him that we’ve never seen before—the sweet overprotective part of Daemon that cares about Katy in ways he didn’t in Obsidian. Plus he makes a bet with Katy that by New Year’s Day she’ll admit she is insanely in love with him, does he win that bet? I can’t tell you.My only complaint about the novel is the inconsistent pace. However, with the introduction of new characters and the DOD I have to admit that I believe it when most of the characters when they claim that there are things worse than death. From the content described in the novel, the DOD is everything you’ve heard about going on inside of Area 51. Have I forgotten to mention that Bethany returns in this novel? Well now I have and now you’re interested. Don’t deny it.Packed full of twists, turns and unexpected surprises, Onyx definitely stands apart from Obsidian. I would recommend the novel to fans of the previous Lux story, readers who like reading about aliens and readers who want a YA romance that is similar to the one seen in Hush, Hush.
