A mostly Young Adult book review blog run by a mother and daughter team.
Ugh! I hearted this book so much. And I’m pretty sure I’m in love with a demon named Roth. What is it about bad boys that just makes the heart beat double time? But it can’t just be any bad boy…it’s gotta be a bad boy that wants to become a better “man” because of a certain girl. And they’ve gotta have the cocky attitude and the oh so corny one liners. And they’ve gotta have that smirk that gets thrown around at just the right moments. And let’s not forget the smoldering looks… oh yah….
If you’re looking for a bad boy that will be totally unforgettable, White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout is one that you are definitely going to want to pick up. Bad boys not your thing? There’s a pretty sexy gargoyle in this story…Zayne. You know the type…the sweet, tortured type who can do no wrong?
Layla’s life is pretty different than that of your typical seventeen year old girl. She’s half demon and half Warden (Warden’s being gargoyle type warriors sent to earth to protect mankind from demons and other hellish things), and she’s being raised in a home of Wardens who have taught her from the day she was found and adopted that demons = bad…which is kinda difficult since she’s, ya know, half demon. And to make matters more difficult, she’s in love with a Warden that she has come to be like a brother to her…until those feelings morphed into something more.
Unfortunately for Layla, demons and Wardens don’t mix. Wardens mate with their own kind, and being half demon, Layla’s dreams of being with Zayne is impossible. Throw in the fact that her demon side has pretty much limited her from getting close to any boy since she can suck the living soul out of them…literally. Sure, sure…she has the ability to see anyone’s soul and has the ability to tag demons for the Wardens to hunt later, but not being able to experience your first kiss because one deadly touch of the lips and it’s bye bye?
But things have been getting rather difficult for Layla lately. More and more demons have been coming up from hell and have their sights set on Layla. And it’s not to have a friendly conversation. Oh no, it’s to see her dead by their hands or to capture for some other upper level demon. That is, until Layla meets Roth. A hot demon in her high school who makes everyone do a double take he’s so hot? Oh yah. Roth doesn’t seem to want Layla dead…au contraire. He’s appearing out of nowhere to save her from some very close calls.
And it’s only inevitable that Layla falls for her leading man. But can she trust that his intentions are as he says? Or is there an underlying reason that he’s helping her? And just how much information about her life and past are the Warden’s keeping from her? Is there anyone that she can trust?
I will admit that it did take me awhile to warm up to the characters in this story, and to warm up to the idea of gargoyles. But it didn’t take too long for me to become totally engrossed in all that is White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout. And when the character of Roth was introduced? Yah, I was hooked.
I really enjoyed the humor that was in this story. The interactions between characters was comical and at times serious and heartwarming. I loved that as the story progressed, we see Layla become stronger and more confident. But what I really loved about White Hot Kiss was the scenes with Layla and Roth. The build up to this epic friendship/relationship is one that I could not tear my eyes away from. The chemistry between these two was fantastic to watch.
When the time came for the big show down in the end, I honestly couldn’t stop reading. It was all go go go and then BAM! Omg…I felt all the emotions…and I mean ALL the emotions! I literally cried as I powered through the last few pages. I am dying for book 2! I need to know what happens next! I wish that it were available now because I really wasn’t ready to stop reading about these characters and how their lives were intertwined and coming together. ARGH!
Trust me when I say that if you’re looking for a book that will introduce you to the world of gargoyles, do not hesitate in grabbing a copy of White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout. We can fangirl about Roth together!
