A mostly Young Adult book review blog run by a mother and daughter team.
Fair Coin by E.C. Myers was one huge mind warp. With every chapter, there would be an event that would happen that would blow my mind yet again.Ephraim Scott is like your typical teenager complete with his own personal problems. With an alcoholic mother, and a deceased father, Ephraim is the one taking care of his mother and himself. But when he comes home and find his mother passed out at the kitchen table he thinks it’s just another typical day at home…until he sees the pill bottle, and a scattering of little purple pills. To make things worse, the reasons for which his mother decides to attempt to take her life has Ephraim reeling. She believed that Ephraim was dead…even saw the body. Right out of the Twilight zone, Ephraim can’t understand why his mother would even begin to believe that…until he sees the personal belongings that were given to his mother after confirming it was his body. Among those possessions is a coin. A coin that makes no sense, has never been created, and really shouldn’t exist. After finding a note in his school locker telling him to flip the coin and make a wish, things go from weird to even weirder. A coin that can grant wishes can’t possibly exist, can it? And what up with his doppelganger? Where did he come from?Time travel, quantum physics, other dimensions… Fair Coin was all of that and more! Fair Coin was full of plot twists and WTF’s! If I attempted to even guess what any of the events that happened in the book would happen, I couldn’t…because seriously….this book messed with my mind! In a good way!It kept me on my toes, and constantly had me thinking and guessing. I found author, E.C. Myers’ writing style to be extremely addicting and easy to follow. Although the topic of quantum physics is in play, E.C. Myers’ wrote it in such a way that readers will be able to follow along relatively easy. The characters created in this book were ones that I’m sure readers will be able to relate to…well, maybe not Nate because, he’s kinda crazy… Read it, and you’ll see what I mean. Once Ephraim starts to jump from one dimension to the next, the pace of the book definitely picks up and it’s just go, go, go! One event after another, after another!Fans of sci-fi, time travel, doppelgangers, and reads that will mess with your mind will devour Fair Coin by E.C. Myers. I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us in Quantum Coin, coming out October 23, 2012.
