So lately, I’ve been hearing a lot of hype about the novel Unspoken by author Sarah Rees Brennan, the first novel in the Lynburn Legacy series. Considering that I was offered the opportunity, I definitely wanted to see what all the hype was about and that meant getting to read Unspoken. I read the synopsis and my interest was piqued, after reading the opening chapter I have to admit… it already sounded pretty freaking awesome. The novel is set in England in the town of Sorry-in-the-Vale, a small town that is not only overly gothic but also held clichéd names that I fell in love with right off the bat… Oh and its home to the mysterious Lynburn family who hold their own dark secrets *cue ominous laughter*.Unspoken is told from the POV (point of view) of main character Kami Glass who I found to be a total Mary Sue (And if you don’t know what that means, I’ll explain later on in the review, pinky promise). She’s on the newspaper, she may not be her parent’s favorite child but is definitely one of those girls who you see and think “what a goodie two-shoes!” The only thing that could be defined as wrong with Kami is the fact that she’s awkward… and that she can hear the voice of a boy she has never met in her head. The only thing is that when Kami takes an interest (and slight vow) to uncover just what makes the Lynburn family so frightening to the others in Sorry-in-the-Vale when they return after their decades in the US of A. Kami first meets Ash, a Lynburn boy who quickly takes an interest and sudden liking in her. It doesn’t take too long for Kami to end up meeting Jared Lynburn who is the portrait of the modern day bad boy:Leather jacket, motorcycle and good looks that could kill. After a series of killings in the woods and the attempted murder of Kami—her and Kami find themselves working together to uncover what is happening in Sorry-in-the-Vale. Kami must also overcome the fact that the boy in her head might not be who she thought he was and now that she knows he is a real boy she must learn to cope with it.Like I said earlier Kami instantly came off as a Mary Sue (despite the fact that she has a boy stuck in her head quite literally). She is the perfect girl, but as the novel progressed there was a lot of character growth. She goes from being this good girl, obedient creature to a girl who ends up breaking all the rules and at one point even breaks into an office. Talk about a change of character *applauds pun*!The budding romance between Kami and Jared was just amazing, mainly because the characters seemed cute together in the sense that opposites attract. Was I cheering on their romance? All day every single day. Did I want him to start singing Boyfriend to her? Why yes, indeed I did. Considering that Kami was hilarious and that Jared had the perfect mixture of cockiness, as a duo, the two characters were just great to have around. However when we do find out that what makes the Lynburn’s so darn frightening is the fact that they have a supernatural secret—your mind will be blown mark my words. Suddenly, just when you think you know everything, you find out that you were completely off… and I loved it! Everything becomes not only crystal clear, but insanely gothic and frightening. Nobody is safe. And I mean nobody, not even a main character…I would recommend Unspoken to fans of the YA gothic crowd, readers who want a supernatural romance and fans of hotter than Hell bad boys because be honest , who doesn’t?
