I’ve been literally dying from excitement to read Unearthly by Cynthia Hand. From the first moment I laid eyes on the cover, I knew that I wanted to read the novel and that Unearthly and I would become the best of friends. Was I right? Of course I was right. I’m right even when I’m wrong! From the moment I read the prologue I was absolutely hooked and was dying to get thrown head first into the story. Unearthly focuses on the main character Clara’s purpose as a part angel, which leads her to a new town far from her native California. She has a new school and finds out that her purpose is to protect the most handsome and popular guy in school from a wildfire.I’ve never been the new kid, and it was nice to see the way that the main character narrated the novel in a more realistic way (or what I assume is a realistic way). There was no immediate bullying or getting food thrown at her and stuff (‘cause I’ve read that in some books and it only happens to the new kid). Though, because of Clara’s need to get near the hottest thing to walk the earth/most popular guy in school—Christian she ends up coming off as a total stalker.Which I found kinda awesome-sauce because in most novels where the main character tries to get so close to their crush that they end up being a stalker, all of the stalked persons friends don’t even bring it up when they’ve noticed. In those novels it’s no big deal, just a guy being stalked and followed. Whatever. Not the case in Unearthly. Eventually Christian’s friends begin to notice and bring it up with Christian, initiating the both sad and funny scene where Clara learns that her new nickname at school is Bozo (like the clown character).I’ve read quite a few angel genre novels and suspected this novel to be kinda like all the others. Main character acts like a guardian angel, falls in love with the boy and they live happily ever after. Again, not the case in Unearthly. Not only does the main character not know much about her abilities as an angel, but she doesn`t even really know much about the world of the part-angels. However, there is a wide range of characters and while Clara does work to end up in a relationship with Christian– another character (who I personally liked from the start) just might work his way into Clara’s heart.I would recommend this novel to fans of Hush, Hush, angel lore and YA romance. Beware the Black Wings.
